Who are those guys?

A lot of you have been asking (all right, two of you) who are the guys with me in my profile pictures? Well the guys posing with me in the photos are two retired NASCAR Winston Cup drivers, Ernie Irvan and Lake Speed. I got the chance to spend some great time with these two gentlemen during two different events with the Historic Stock Car Racing Series (http://www.hscrs.com). More about the group in a later blog.
Ernie joined us during an event at Portland International Raceway in July of 2002, but didn't race with us, and hasn't really raced since his last wreck when was racing the #36 Skittles Pontiac in 1999. Lake raced with us in an event at Phoenix International Raceway in February of 2001. He had such a good time that he located one of his former race cars, a 1994 #83 Purex Ford Thunderbird, and restored it to race in historic stock car events on the east coast. Both of these guys are just neat people to talk to, and further demonstrate the accessibility of NASCAR drivers.
And what's with the cowboy hat? Well, my nickname IS "Cowboy". I have been an historian, announcer, and photographer with the HSCRS since 2000, so I spend more than my share of time in the sun and the hat really helps (especially since I shave my head). But I've also worn cowboy hats and boots since I was about 7. It's as ingrained into my persona as Ford blue in my blood.
Yee haw.
