Still wanna rock?

Wednesday Jan 23, 2008 10:20:00 PM

Hey there! Just thought I'd drop in and offer another two cents worth of my drival. First off, blogging is probably the lowest form of backyard gossip. The only difference is the amount of nieghbors that may or may not gossip back. Who really reads this garbage, and who really gives a flying f.f.f.f.f ?

Well here we go again with my thoughts about auto enthusiast web sites such as this on and the many others that dot the cyber landscape.

Recently, while surfing another site, known as Cardomain, I ran across a page dominated with what could only be termed as demi-racist attitude. There was no actual human ethnicity being slurred, or any of that type of horrendous trash being offered. What was blogged on a page meant for pictures of cars was mostly idiotic,
ignorant rants about fellow enthusiast.

It seems that innocent car junkies find sites like Cardomain with like minded gear heads. These folks register without actually owning a car, or if they do, its Grandma's 87 Cutlass Supreme with massive amounts of rust. They then surf the net and rip pictures from unsuspecting websites that show fine exotics, and post them as the cool cars they wish they could own. Some may even try to pass that fine Italian piece off as thier own.

Aside from the obvious portents of questionable taste, Most of these "offenders" are simply trying to find a place to fit in, and Dang it, yep that Italian number would look cool in my drive as well!

My son and I find common ground in the area of trains. What kid does't like big steam engines and diesal locos? The same arrogant atmosphere that permeated this one Cardomain members site also runs rampant im many of the model railroading hobby shops around the area I live in. Why do I bring this up? You see, my kid likes trains, so why do old men look down upon him? Same as the kids who become members of free sociaties such as this one here, and Cardomain. These old men are ignorantly blissful in thier belief that children are the scourge of the train hobby, and should be stopped. Tsk tsk.

That ten year old can draw the wickedest looking Lambo ever on the back of his binder. He will dream of owning his own set of wheels for the next seven years!
Myspace is boring to him yet he likes to be around likeminded gearheads learning anything and everything about drifting that Nissan he wants! So in this digital age, he turns to the web only to be lamblasted for his personal dreams (not being good enough or just plain over the top)

That 17 year old kid that just actually got his Grandma's Olds (the one with all the rust) has a new sense of freedom, just like you had when you got your first ride.
The only problem he has is the Burger Bag doesn't pay squat, so the mismatched set of unhealthy looking tires will have to do. Does that mean he isn't aloud to dream about what he thinks the Olds could be?

Does a member of any of these web sites actually have to own, currently, a marquee brand automobile, with a concourse quality finish? Does the car in question have to be rare, Barrett Jackson material?

Quite honestly, the way this single person aired his complaint annoyed me, but it wasn't just his comments. Others were invited to join the slaughter of the innocents by way of guestbook signing. And to no suprise, now that a good thing was brought before the firing squad, the enraged villagers showed up, en masse, with thier pitchforks, burning torches, knives and guns. Not a single person stood up to defend the right to be a part of a free community without reprisal.

The disgruntled members swung away at the rest of the half million members on that one carsight alone, and bandied about the ideas of paid memberships and regulating exactly who should be allowed to post. It began to sound very cliquish, and quite rude.

They even took issue with posted pictures of the scantily clad women that appear within certain member pages. Unfortunatley, that is of concern with many forums pertaining to what is decent and what isn't, so I won't bother with thier rants, other than to say, if those pictures are of bother, why is that portion of this car culture so predominate at events such as NOPI?

I digress.

My point is this:

We have been allowed an unprecedented chance to become part of a culture much larger than the highschool parkinglot where guys (and girls) used to hang out and share good times around the clunker sedan or fixed up hot rod. What used to be just a concourse event or hot rod and custom show is now a 24 hour virtual car show where anyone can attend without threat of condemnation. This is our chance to appriciate each others love for personal transportation no matter the marque. The battle between Ford, Chevy, and Mopar was always light hearted at its core.
Hard core followers of those streetlight skirmishes showed repect towards each other. So what now has changed?

So why are we finding issues with these kind of insurgents?

I don't have the answer to that one, but I can tell you, It reeks of the intolerable conditions this country suffers from way outside of this automotive subject. I called it racist earlier.

Sadly, even though some of the people targeted are of the same ethnicity, it still smacks of a condencending air that shouldn't exist.

I have said enough for now. I hope my point is taken in the vain it was meant. To be fair, I have not run into these problems here at Carster. Most of the people stopping by to ogle my car have nice things to say about it. It it after all just a Saturn. Guys and gals with all kinds of different cars and lifestyles get what I am doing here. We are gearheads all.

Now get back to that music video game and play some air guitar!!!
