Formula D Final Round

Another season of Formula D wrapped up successfully at the same venue where it started -- The House of Drift at the Irwindale Speedway. Your humble Carster correspondent was there to check things out while actually attending my very first Formula D Drift event, a driving series that I hope to see take off in mainstream popularity.
Drifting is not only a type of motor sports driving, but also an influential factor in car modding and lifestyle -- and let me tell you, style is the name of the game at a Drift event.
The open pit environment invites the audience to feel a part of everything that takes place. I wandered though the pits, checking out the stacks of toasted tires as the Drift crews made their last minute adjustments. It was obvious that everyone in attendance loved that they could so easily experience the pit scene up close and personal, and with the numerous auto parts and tire manufacturers on hand (brand names prominently displayed, of course), the corporate support for what is a relatively new motor sport to the US was encouraging.
For those of you who might not be sure what drifting is, I'll break it down into a little Drift 101: Clutch pump; e-brake; power over; oh shit! Yeah, that's the American lingo in the drift scene, but they were sweating bullets and yelling in Japanese over 10 years ago before Drifting crossed the Pacific and landed here.
The art of Drifting involves skillfully breaking your vehicle's traction to intentionally induce lateral slip, resulting in an over-steered condition. If you've ever raced a rear wheel-drive car down the street and really hung out the rear end in a corner -- that's Drifting. But when you see the professionals do it, you immediately understand that your average driver's little rainy-day Drift experiences doesn't cover a fraction of what a real Drifter can achieve.
So check out the pictures below to see the work involved in producing a Drift car, and also to get an idea of how much fun the event was - then marvel over the fact that I somehow get paid to do this . . .
