On to a better place!
Tuesday Oct 10, 2006 10:21:00 PM
Well... Where do I begin? Sadly to say, tonight we had to put our Beagle to sleep. April and I got him back when we first started dating in 00'. We picked him up from Lied Animal Shelter here in Las Vegas. When we were walking around "shopping" for a soon to be new member of our soon to be family. We came across this little (3-5 year old) beagle who was shaking in his stall. We asked the kennel attendant to see him. He wouldn't budge! So the kennel attendant had to go through the back and shove him through the little doggie door.
They let us go into a room alone w/ this beagle and get to know him a little. Well after a few minutes he decided that he was going to walk around (finally). He went back and forth between the two of us trying to figure out who might have a cookie or something. But neither of us did so he just gave up. We both talked it over and decided to get him! As soon as we put on the leash/collar thingy that the animal shelter gave us, he went NUTS... I guess he was just soo excited to finally get out of that place. This 30 minute ago scared doggie turned into a bundle of energy! He would pull and tug almost to the point that he was choking himself.
We get him in the truck to take him home and he's all over the place! We couldn't get him to sit still and we finally get back to the base. I still lived in the Dorms on base at the time so I wasn't allowed any animals. No Animals shmanimals! He stayed with me night and day.... Until I had a random room inspection that is! There I am sleeping in my room with this Beagle at the foot of my bed and I hear a knock at the door. "ROOM INSPECTION" I'm like Oh shiet!!! I've got a Beagle at the foot of my bed and I’m in my boxers :)... So I yell hold on grab the beagle and run into the bathroom. Well for some reason he likes to wheeze or whatever it is that beagles do sometimes. I'm afraid that the dorm manager is gonna hear it so I start coughing to cover up his noises until the coast is clear.
After all that happened I realized I can't keep this dog with me all the time so when I would go to work I'd drop him off at April's house kind of like we had split custody or some shiet. Anyways it worked out perfectly!!! Well we still hadn't come up with a name for this beagle so one day when I was dropping April off at school (yes she was still in school) we were looking through a Sport Compact magazine I just happened to have laying in the truck. Thumbing through it we come across a set of bling bling wheels called KOBE. We both thought that was a pretty nice name so that's what he got!
We played the split custody game for a couple of months then decided to move into our own apartment off base. Kobe loved that because he could finally stay in one house. (he was probably confused about where he lived) Shortly after we moved in April gets this bright idea that Kobe needed a friend. So what does she get? A CAT!!!! Well with Kobe being the only "child" for quite some time I think he got a little jealous of the new addition and decides "I’m gonna show them what's up" and leaves a NICE STEAMY DEUCE right in the middle of our bed. Needless to say we didn't get anymore animals for a while!
Although April and I aren't much of party-ers we do go out and do "stuff" sometimes. Our neighbor in the apartment complex had invited us to go with them to a cool little place called "Valley of Fire". Don't think Kobe liked the idea of him having to stay at home for a couple of hours ALONE to take care of his little CAT brother and ran off. The apartments weren't gated so he could have been ANYWHERE! After a couple of hours later our neighbor found him and brought him home. We gave him the "don't you ever do that again" lecture and went on our way.
Well a couple of years go by and we're now living back on base but this time together in the same house. =) Kobe liked the idea of moving back on base because he'd have his very own yard to run around in and all the grass he could DIG UP! Then October 10th 2006 rolls around and Kobe isn't feeling so well. He's lost 11 pounds in the past 3 weeks, drinks water every chance he gets, then lets it out where ever he is at the time. He seems to have lost the pep and happiness that he once had so we decide to take him to Craig road Animal Hospital to ask the Doc. what's up. The Doc. decides that she should take a blood and urine sample to further investigate. 45 min. or so go by and the Doc. comes back out with some papers in her hand. What we were about to hear, we were not expecting. "I have some bad news"... "He has Diabetes and his numbers are off the chart!" Well I guess "most" people can't afford to take care of a Diabetic animal for to long and usually end up..... We didn't want our turn to come up but I guess it did. Kobe wasn't doing to well, was probably in pain, and we couldn't afford a $1200.00/2 day vet bill. He would most likely be in the hospital for almost a week if not more.
We ask to see him one more time before he had to go. The Doc. brings him back in and April and I take turns holding and loving him. Then the time came. It was time to let him go and move on to a better place where he's not in pain or suffering anymore. October 10th 2006 9:47PM 3 days before my birthday and he's not going to be there. REST IN PEACE BOY! I miss you!
