The Honda Civic Del Sol has its share of admirers and detractors, but it’s a car with a peculiar history in the Honda line-up, and in October of 2006, the Del Sol is also the car that wins our Carster of the Month contest!
I have no idea where Rice Police came up with the theme for his car, but he’s played it out to the fullest. He even has a special set of aviator sunglasses he wears only when driving his beloved Del Sol.
First off, I must say thanks to Rice Police for shining up his auto for the Carster visit – it was literally sparkling for our cameras. Second, thanks to Kinko’s for not having the Carster check ready, or even in their system, but getting it out to me in less than an hour once I went to pick it up! Having not developed a back-up plan for the Carster of the Month check, I don’t know what I would have done if Kinko’s hadn’t busted their butts to get it done to meet my deadline.
But back to Shane (aka Rice Police) and his clean machine. I will admit that, while I’m no longer fan of the Del Sol, Shane’s auto was definitely snazzier once I got to see it in person rather than just in pictures on the computer … but maybe it was his over the top Carster profile that turned me off about his car in the past (crashing browser = bad opinion of car . . . catch my drift, Shane?).
But not only does he have a great looking exterior, with custom vinyl graphics overlaying a sweet black paint job, but every area of the car was lovingly attended to: OEM GSR phat-fives, a Wings West front lip, a front-mount intercooler with wrapped piping that adds a great racer touch. But it’s not all about the exterior -- Shane has his in-dash DVD, pop-off steering wheel, and seats from an S2000. Popping the hood, there is too much for me to even begin to rattle off, but I will give some props to the great looking valve cover, cam gears and that lusty turbo manifold, plus a beefy intake manifold and blow off valve. I could hardly take it all in.
Looking through the pictures, I’m sure you Honda guys will spot even more modifications than I did, and for everyone else, I hope you appreciate this often overlooked Civic Del Sol for all the sweat and work that’s gone into it. I have to say, watching Shane blow by me a few times on the road, his car can really rip. Shane constantly takes it to redline, whether he’s on the street or at the track, and he even drag races and auto-crosses the darn thing, which surprised me a little.
I know that many of us concentrate on only one particular aspect of our cars at a time, but Shane thinks about everything between show and go -- he can tell you about every car he’s ever raced, every car he wants to race, and every pass he’s made on the drag strip.
Well Shane, keep on Rice Patrolling, and I want to see some pictures of that custom roll-cage that your $1000 Carster of the Month check will contribute nicely toward!
